Our recent fieldwork for a project in Anaheim and Orange County, California revealed that the area is on the verge of a major tourism upswing. With international events on the calendar, exciting new attractions, and billions in development underway, the region is preparing for a new era of growth. Here is a look at what is driving the momentum:
Anaheim Sets a Bold Target for 2027
Visit Anaheim has announced plans to increase annual visitation by 20%, aiming to welcome 30 million visitors per year by 2027—up from an estimated 25 million in recent years. This growth is expected to be fueled by major events like the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and Super Bowl LXI in 2027, as well as continued investment in the Disneyland Resort area. The anticipated visitor surge will drive increased demand for local hotels.Olympic Spotlight on Orange County
When Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics, Orange County will play a featured role as the host site for surfing competitions at Lower Trestles Beach. This global exposure is expected to enhance the region’s reputation as a world-class surf and recreation destination, while boosting tourism and hospitality businesses across the area.Disneyland Resort Expansion Approved
In 2024, the Anaheim City Council gave the green light to a $1.9 to $2.5 billion expansion of the Disneyland Resort. The multi-year project will bring new attractions, hotels, shops, and restaurants, as well as improvements to infrastructure and parking. Thousands of jobs will be created during construction, with long-term benefits for nearby businesses and hotels.New Attractions Coming to California Adventure
Starting in 2026, Disney’s California Adventure will see major updates, including a new Coco-themed ride and an expanded Avengers Campus with two new attractions. Preliminary plans have also been announced for a large-scale immersive experience based on the Avatar film franchise. Other recent updates include the debut of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the reimagining of the Pixar Place Hotel.Downtown Disney District Adds Dining and Retail
The Downtown Disney District continues to evolve with several new dining venues in the works, including Arthur & Sons Steak and Bourbon, Pearl’s Roadside BBQ, Porto’s Bakery & Café, and the Parkside Market food hall. Two new retail shops featuring Disney and Marvel merchandise opened in late 2024. These additions support Disney’s strategy to enhance offerings for upscale guests.OCVIBE Development Brings Energy to Anaheim
Near the Honda Center, the $4 billion OCVIBE mixed-use development is now under construction. The large-scale project will include 1,500 residential units, two hotels, more than 30 dining options, a 5,700-seat concert venue, and 20 acres of parks and open space. The development will be completed in phases and is expected to transform the surrounding area into a vibrant live-work-play district.
