Our recent research for a project in Fort Lauderdale revealed that the greater Broward County area is experiencing a wave of transformative development. With over $6 billion in current and planned investments, the region is enhancing its appeal as a tourism, convention, and transportation hub. Here is a breakdown of the major projects underway:
Broward County Convention Center Expansion in Full Swing
A $1.2 billion revitalization of the Broward County Convention Center is progressing rapidly. The project recently celebrated the opening of a 350,000-square-foot exhibit space in the new West Building. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the full plan includes a 65,000-square-foot waterfront ballroom, a six-acre outdoor plaza, several restaurants, and a new Omni headquarters hotel connected to the complex.New Terminal Rises at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
Construction is underway on a fifth terminal at FLL, following the October 2023 groundbreaking for the $404 million facility. The terminal is expected to be completed in 2026. Additional airport enhancements are also in the works, including two terminal connectors set to open in 2027 and a new intermodal transportation center scheduled for 2029. These improvements will help accommodate rising passenger volumes and streamline travel throughout the region.Upgrades to the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center and International Swimming Hall of Fame
A recently completed $47 million renovation at the Aquatic Center added five pools and a 27-meter dive tower—the tallest in the Western Hemisphere. A further $190 million is now being invested in the adjacent International Swimming Hall of Fame to create new museum space, an aquarium, and a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway.PREMO Network Aims to Transform Regional Transit
Broward County is advancing a $4.4 billion mobility initiative called the PREMO Network. The long-term plan includes a commuter rail line connecting Fort Lauderdale to Miami, a light rail system linking the airport, Port Everglades, and the Convention Center, and a new rapid bus corridor serving 16 major destinations across the county. The comprehensive transit overhaul will be implemented in phases over the next 15 years.
